Bottom line: Two ways to increase faith: First, by following Jesus' example of humble service. Second and most fundamental, to mark the door of your heart with the lamb's blood."
We began Holy Week with this prayer: "Increase the faith of those who place their hope in you..." "Aumenta la fe de los que esperan en ti..." We saw that the problem of pain, especially unjust suffering presents a huge obstacle to faith. That obstacle, however, is not insurmountable. Tonight Jesus, a completely innocent man, stands on the brink of horrible suffering. He will endure it for you and for me. In this midst of this anguish, he offers two ways to increase faith.
The first way to increase faith is by service of others. Jesus says:
"If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet,
you ought to wash one another's feet.
"Si yo, que soy el Maestro y el Senor, les he lavado los pies,
tambien ustedes deben lavarse los pies los unos a los otros."
I have given you a model to follow,
so that as I have done for you, you should also do."
"Les he dado ejemplo,
You and I are made for service. If we flee to an isolated world, we naturally become sad and depressed. Mother Teresa, when she noticed her sisters getting lethargic and glum, she would tell them, "Get out with the people." No matter how bad you are feeling, there's someone in worse shape than you. Maybe someone in your own household. When we humble ourselves and reach out to someone else, it picks us up. It increases our faith.
Now, this doesn't mean you can save yourself by good works. A person could have as much money as Bill Gates and use it all to help others. It still wouldn't save you. We need something more fundamental. That brings us to the second and most basic way to increase faith - by accepting the the blood of the lamb. At the first Passover God told the Israelites to do this with the lamb's blood.
"They shall take some of its blood
and apply it to the two doorposts and the lintel
of every house in which they partake of the lamb."
"Tomaran la sangre
y rociaran las dos jambas y el dintel de la puerta
de la casa donde vayan a comer el cordero."
Notice that they mark not only the lintel above the door, but also the two doorposts on each side of the door. When a person goes in or goes out of the house, he does so through the blood of the lamb.
For us to come to God and for God to come to us, we need the Blood of the Lamb. We need Jesus.
So tonight Jesus gives two ways to increase faith: First, by following His example of humble service. Second and most fundamental, to mark the door of your heart with the lamb's blood - that God would come to you and you to God. Amen.
