During these days many of our young people are graduating from university, high school or grade school. We had a good Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation ceremony here at Holy Family on Tuesday. I am praying for all of our graduates as they face new challenges and hopes.
Next Sunday we will have the first anniversary Mass for Sharon Carriere. Our parish school dedicated their yearbook in her memory: “Sharon was the Holy Family secretary for many years. She was also a great supporter of Holy Family School. Sharon meant a lot to many people and we were very proud to call her our friend! We miss her very much.” After the 11am Mass we will rededicate the Ailbe House Library in her honor. Please join Sharon’s husband, Duane, the Carriere children and grandchildren for that event.
Besides the Sharon Carriere Library, other rooms in the Ailbe House will be named. For example, our Hispanic Legion of Mary has named a room in honor of St. Louis de Montfort and the school a room in honor of St. Maximilian Kolbe. For simplicity we will refer to them as the Montfort and Kolbe rooms. Other names include St. Lorenzo Ruiz, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, Fr. Michael McGiveny, St. Dunstan, St. Robert Bellarmine, Blessed Mother Gamelin, and Blessed Karl Leisner.
We had a fun Luau last Saturday – and it earned much needed funds for our parish school. Below are some pictures I took of the event. Please pray for the U.S. Bishops who will be on retreat this next week. They are facing some very difficult issues. The controversy regarding Catholic politicians has brought to the fore a most distressing problem: we have a whole generation of Catholics who are often confused about their faith, hostile to the Magisterium (teaching authority) of the Church – and yet insist they are authentic Catholics. The issue has emerged whether they should receive Communion. The bishops must wrestle with that difficult question. As we see in this Sunday’s readings, our participation in the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is a serious matter. In the Sequence, St. Thomas has these words: “Both the good and the evil eat, but how unequal their fates! One to endless life, the other to endless death. To one death, to another life: Behold how the same feast brings an infinitely different outcome!” These are serious words. I hesitate to quote them because overly scrupulous people will automatically think they apply to themselves. But on the other side, many more have become overly casual in their approach to the Eucharist. As the Missalette states, “Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the oneness of faith, life and worship.” People who publically advocate same-sex marriage, abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and the use of human embryos for stem-cell research have obviously departed from “the oneness of faith.” The bishops face the difficult task of how to challenge Catholic politicians who promote those heinous practices. Pray that the Holy Spirit gives the necessary wisdom, courage and gentleness to our shepherds.
A local concern which affects us is the opening of a Planned Parenthood facility on Roxbury and 28th Ave SW. Those interested in discussing this issue are invited to a meeting this Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the rectory.
Durante estos días muchos de nuestros jóvenes están graduándose de la universidad, secundaria o primaria. Tuvimos una misa de graduación en la parroquia el día martes. Estoy rezando por todos los graduados que están enfrentando nuevas esperanzas y posibilidades.
El próximo Domingo tenemos la misa de aniversario de Sharon Carriere. Al mediodía vamos a rededicar la biblioteca en su honor. Todos son invitados. Otros cuartos de la Ailbe House recibirán nuevos nombres. Por ejemplo nuestra Legión de María ha dado el nombre de San Luis de Montfort y la escuela parroquia ha nombrado un cuarto en honor a San Maximiliano Kolbe. Se llamaran la sala Montfort y la sala Kolbe. Favor de rezar por nuestros obispos en su retiro espiritual esta semana. Ellos están discerniendo su respuesta a unas situaciones difíciles en este país, especialmente en relación con los políticos católicos que públicamente rechazan enseñanzas básicas del Catecismo. La pregunta que muchos tienen es si deben recibir la Comunión si no están en unión con la Iglesia. Las Normas Para la Recepción de la Eucaristía, imprimadas en su misalito, dicen “Los católicos creemos que la celebración Eucarística es una señal de unidad de fe, la vida y el culto.” Si uno no esta en unión con la fe de la Iglesia, no debe recibir la santa Comunión. La Secuencia de la misa de hoy dice, “Lo comen buenos y malos, con provecho diferente; no es lo mismo tener vida que ser condenado a muerte. A los malos les da muerte y a los buenos les da vida. ¡Qué efecto tan diferente tiene la misma comida!”
San Pablo dice que si alguien recibe el cuerpo y la sangre del Señor “indignamente” que “come y bebe su propia condenación” (I Cor 11:29) Cito estas palabras con un poco de temor porque sé algunos de Uds. sufren de escrupulosidad – y automáticamente piensan que las palabras aplican a su persona, a pesar de haber examinado su conciencia al exceso. Por otro lado – y creo que esto aplica a un numero mayor – muchos son muy despreocupados en su forma de comulgar.
Antes muchos no se acercaron para comulgar. Hoy en este país – con la excepción de que no son casados por la iglesia – pocos se abstienen. Incluidos en el numero son unos que asisten esporádicamente a la misa dominical y otros que están envueltos en serios pecados sexuales.
Las Normas insisten, “Quien haya cometido pecado grave desde su ultima confesión no debe recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Seno sin antes haberse confesado con un sacerdote, excepto en situaciones extremas cuando no hay oportunidad de confesarse.” No es para castigar. Es para misericordia. La Iglesia como buena madre esté preocupada que sus hijos no comen y beben su propia condenación. Recen por nuestros obispos que el Espiritu Santo les dé sabiduría, valentía y compasión para ser buenos pastores.
