Mensaje: Guerra espiritual no es individualista. Somos parte de una multitud - una gran cosecha.
Message: Spiritual warfare is not individualistic. We are part of a multitude - a great ingathering.
For this all-parish bilingual Mass, I am giving the homily in English, but begin with a summary in Spanish:
Las lecturas son buenas para enfocarnos en la gran cosecha - "ingathering." En Romanos San Pablo habla de reunir su "raza" - los judios con los no-judios. Lo vemos en el evanglio cuando Jesus viaja fuera del territorio judio. Encuentra una mujer cananea que pide ayuda para su hija. Jesus insiste que su ministerio pertenece a las ovejas decarriadas de Israel. Los judios tienen prioridad. La senora persiste y al final Jesus dice, "que grande es tu fe!" Es un momento dramatico - signo de la gran cosecha. La misa de hoy se puede ver como parte de este recoger. No sera facil. Estamos en una guerra espiritual, pero no es una guerra individualista. Somos parte de un movimiento - una multitud - una gran cosecha.
We have good readings this Sunday for our all-parish Mass and picnic. They focus on the great "in-gathering."
Let's start with St. Paul's letter to the Romans. He desires that his fellows Jews accept Jesus. He reminds them of their gifts and their call. And he states: "the gifts and call of God are irrevocable." For those of us who are not Jews by inheritance, we are like "wild olive branches" who have been grafted onto the Jewish tree. This has happened through Jesus. Jesus desires the great ingathering of both Jews and Gentiles.
We see that in the Gospel. When Jesus travels outside of Jewish territory a Canaanite woman asks him to minister to her daughter. Jesus insists that his ministry belongs to "the lost sheep...of Israel." So Israel, the Jewish people, have priority. But Jesus also knows the prophecies of ingathering not only for Jews but also foreigners.
We have one of those prophecies in our first reading. Isaiah foresees a day when foreigners (non-Jews) would come to the Lord. Some of them would even become ministers to the Lord, bringing offerings and sacrifices. This privilege we can't achieve on our own - only through Jesus.
That ingathering begins today when Jesus responds to the Canaanite woman. At first negative. Jesus sometimes says "no" to our prayers. He has his reasons. The Canaanite woman, however, persists.
In prayer persistence pays. To the Canaanite woman Jesus says, "O woman, how great is your faith! Let it be done as you wish."
This is a dramatic moment - a sign of the great ingathering.
I hope that we can see our Mass and picnic as part of that ingathering.
Archbishop Hunthausen had that experience. He tells about celebrating a parish Mass followed by a picnic. He filled his medium size paper plate then found a place under a tree. A boy sat next to him who had a large corning ware plate heaped with food. Naturally curious, Archbishop Hunthausen asked the boy about. "Oh," he said, "I live in the house over there. I saw the picnic and decided to bring my own plate. Archbishop Hunthausen remarked that the boy was on to something. God wants a great ingathering.
Each person has arrived here by their own route. Yet we are together in this Valley. We each have gifts and a call. They are meant for community. I'm not saying it will be smooth sailing. It will cost something. After all we are in a spiritual war.
More about that next week when Jesus speaks about "gates of the netherworld" - los poderes del infierno, the powers of hell. Against them he says, "I will build my church." Edificare mi iglesia.
Spiritual warfare, as we see today, is not individualistic. We are part of a movement, a multitude - a great ingathering. Amen.
