I FIND THE ARCHDIOCESE'S AVOIDANCE OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC, NOR TANGIBLE EVIDENCE OF THE EXISTANCE OF ANY OMNIPOTENT ENTITY(IES) TO BE TYPICAL OF A RELIGIOUS INDIVIDUAL. THE CHRISTIAN FAITH HAS BEEN IN EXISTANCE FOR APPROXIMATELY TWO THOUSAND YEARS YET THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ONE SOLID GRAM OF TANGIBLE EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE EXISTANCE OF GOD. THIS IS USUALLY DISMISSED BY REFERRING TO FAITH AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN HUMAN EXISTANCE. THIS IS YET ANOTHER AVOIDANCE OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO GOD, NO ALLAH, NO VISHNU, NO SUPREME ENTITY WHATSOEVER. RELIGION IS THE CRUTCH OF A WEAK MIND AND IT IS DUE TO THIS FACT THAT THERE IS SO MUCH SUPPORT FOR ORGANIZED RELIGION. HUMANITY IS VESTED WITH AN INHERENT FEAR OF ITS OWN MORTALITY. RELIGION FACILITATES THE AVOIDANCE OF THE INEVITABLE: WE ALL DIE, AND WHEN WE DO, IT IS PERMANENT. CHIMPANZEES TYPICALLY HAVE THE INTELLIGENCE AND SELF AWARENESS OF A FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD. IN THAT MANNER, THEY ARE IDENTICAL TO HUMANITY IN SO FAR AS THEY ARE CENTIENT AND INTELLIGENT, FEELING AND COMPASSIONATE. ACCORDING TO THE DOCTRINE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH, THESE CREATURES, THOUGH SUPPOSEDLY CREATED BY GOD, ARE ENTITLED TO NO AFTERLIFE, NO REWARD FOR THEIR INNOCENT AND SINLESS EXISTANCE. THIS ALONE DEPICTS THE HYPOCRISY AND IGNORANCE OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH. THE BIBLE PREACHES AN EYE FOR AN EYE YET GOD STATES, "VENGEANCE IS MINE". AGAIN, HYPOCRISY AND FLAWED LOGIC. THIS FLAWED LOGIC IS NOT SURPRISING CONSIDERING THAT THE CHURCH OPERATES ON THE PURELY ILLOGICAL ASSUMPTION THAT THERE IS A GOD ABOVE.
One of the things I hoped to show in the article on Carl Sagan was that atheism may well involve wishful thinking and in that sense be a "crutch." Atheists accuse theists of having irrational motives for their belief, but it is just as easy to explain atheism by saying atheists themselves are motivated by irrational, escapist desires. Better to forget the name calling and try to together look at the evidence - as I attempted to do in the article. If the evidence is no good, I would want to be the first one to know.
Fr. Phil Bloom
P.S. There is no Christian doctrine that higher animals are "entitled to no afterlife." Also why is it hypocritical that God would bring about vengeance (justice)?
