Bulletin (October 30, 2005)
This weekend we focus on the Time and Talent aspects of Stewardship. Every one of us has been given certain abilities (talents) and a certain amount of time here on earth. God asks us to use those precious gifts for the good of our neighbor and for His greater glory. In doing so, you will find a peace and joy which this world cannot give. Many of you use your gifts of Time and Talent in your family and local community. That, of course, has a certain priority. Holy Family Parish also needs your contribution of Time and Talent. To help you consider some way in which you might help your parish, I have provided a bulletin insert that lists various parish ministries. They are organized in five categories: Worship, Faith Formation, Service, Parish Life and Facilities.
This week I will be sending a letter to all registered members of our parish that gives a further explanation of Stewardship. The letter will include a blue card asking for your commitment of Time and Talent. It recognizes that you have commitments in your family and in your community – and that you desire to give an appropriate amount of time in those vital areas. It also asks you and other family members to reflect on how you might give of your time in a parish ministry. I ask you to fill out and return that card even if you are already involved in the ministry.
Beyond gifts of time and talent, we also need your contribution of Treasure. The parish needs your sharing of financial resources if we are to maintain our various ministries and enhance our service to children and young people, as well as to the needy of our community, who look to Holy Family Parish for spiritual healing and sustenance. Next weekend families from our parish will give testimonies regarding their own Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure.
In asking for your Stewardship, I also want you to know that Holy Family Parish is striving to be a good steward of the resources you entrust to us. As an indication of Parish Stewardship, I post the minutes from Parish Council, School Commission and Finance Council meetings on a monthly basis. Many good people work with me such as Principal Glen Lutz and Parish Administrator Gary Samaniego, to enable Holy Family to fulfill its mission. You will find much important information in these minutes. I would like to call your attention to a report from Gary Samaniego on recent improvements made at Holy Family, many as a direct result of your support of the Capital Campaign:
• Repair of church doors • New and improved indoor lighting (school, rectory & Ailbe House) that is energy efficient • Asbestos abatement in school • Problems with floor in basement of the school were fixed; floor has been prepared for remodel next summer • New windows installed in basement of school building • Parking lot repair and landscaping in preparation for re-striping which will be done next summer (the re-striping, which requires warm dry weather, will add many additional parking spaces) • The end lot (Bradley property) has been filled in at no charge in exchange for allowing the use of property next to upper playground • New roofs on the school and church • Improvements to various restrooms in the church and Ailbe House
These and other improvements happen because of your ongoing support of Holy Family Parish – this includes Sunday collections, as well as various fundraisers. Speaking of which, this Monday evening we will have the raffle drawing at the Knights of Columbus Halloween Party. All children from Holy Family Parish are invited, as well as adults who desire a fun, family evening. You can still purchase tickets for the $3000, $1000, $500 and other prizes. By doing so, you will help Holy Family Parish with its financial needs.
On a different note, one of the small, but important initiatives here at Holy Family is the use of some Latin propers at our 8am Sunday Mass, as well as a Latin Mass on Tuesday evenings. I was heartened that the recent Synod of Bishops in Rome made a statement encouraging the continued use of Latin, especially in liturgies with people from different language groups:
“In celebrating the Eucharist during international meetings, which are becoming ever more frequent today, in order better to express the unity and universality of the Church it is proposed: that the (con)celebration of Mass be in Latin (except the readings, the homily and the prayer of the faithful), the prayers of the tradition of the Church should also be recited in Latin and, where appropriate, Gregorian chants be sung; that priests, beginning in the seminary, be trained to understand and celebrate Mass in Latin, as well as to use Latin prayers and to appreciate the Gregorian chant; that the possibility of educating the faithful in this way not be overlooked.”
And to conclude on a quite different note, someone sent me an email containing a good question from comedian Jay Leno: “With hurricanes, tornados, flooding, fires, severe thunderstorms, and earthquakes tearing up the country from one end to another - are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?”
